Freeform+Deform teamed up with Alex Gorlin Architects to design a an affordable residential housing mix-used development located in the Livonia Avenue commercial corridor under the elevated train in East New York Brooklyn.

Paying homage to graffiti and the days when New York City subways were adorned by colorful imagery, we introduced an“expression zone” that is viewed at eye level from the train and station platforms. The expression zone is visible as an area of intense visual activity with different colors, artwork and lighting that distinguishes each site. One of the sites proposes an entire art wall along the elevated train, a public “art gallery” that can display the work of local artists.

The development consists of four buildings located on separate sites with 214 apartments, 74 SRO for veterans. Our design also includes 43,600 sqft of retail space, covered parking for 134 cars and bicycle parking, 8,402 sqft. of interior recreation area, and green roofs. The old African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” was the principal concept that inspired the design. The idea was to introduce inner court yards that act as a central space to create the experience of communal living. The majority of the apartments are designed to face the inner court and allows residents to watch their children play within a safely protected environment. The courtyard can be used for celebration gatherings and can host different community activated venues. Under the elevated train, the retail storefronts are recessed at angles to create inviting facades that recall traditional display bay windows
